Happy holiday weekend to everyone. The Harris Family took advantage of the holiday and made it a 4 day weekend. Friday morning we headed to Holland, MI which is on the water and close to Mark's brother. We wanted to spend some time relaxing and also get a chance to see our new nephew baby Ben. We started the weekend with just a lot of relaxation outside. We weren't staying on Lake Michigan, but on an inner lake that feeds to Lake Michigan. Spent lots of time on this hammock chilling...and watching fireworks.
Feels like we were able to disconnect while we were there - no cell phones, or really limited use, no TV, and no computers brought with us. We didn't tote the camera around a lot either, so have some limited pictures from the weekend, but we'll share what we have.
We often would leave the house we were staying at in the morning for breakfast and lunch, and come back in the afternoon for Sawyer's nap. While she slept, Mark and I either hit the hammock, these lounge chairs in the sun, or the bed for naps ourselves. Sawyer got into the act every now and then, though it was so hot we tried to keep her out of the sun.
We ended up heading over to Ann & Ted's on Friday night for a quick visit and stayed for dinner. Sawyer and Charlie were able to play, and turns out they're finally at the right age where they enjoy playing with each other. Charlie would tell Sawyer to "Come on" and show her all the different toys to play with. Turns out they're both big fans of puzzles and spent a fair amount of time doing that.
Mark and I each got a chance to hold Ben, and turns out Sawyer didn't freak quite like I expected. She wanted me to hold the baby, and wanted to touch his toes, and arms and legs herself. I'd say we're making positive progress. I don't know if it's totally set in for me yet that in 4 1/2 months we'll have another one of those, but it was fun holding a small baby again. I feel like I've sort of forgotten though because I just kept thinking what a peanut Ben was, but the boy is over 9 lbs now.
On Saturday, we headed out to the Holland Farmers Market, which was great. We're still savoring the blueberries and cherries we picked up. Sawyer had her first taste of cherries today, and it's safe to say she's also a fan. Not many fruits this girl doesn't like...now if I could just get her to feel that way about veggies. We headed home before lunch to meet up with Kathy and Terry (Grandma and Grandpa Harris) who were coming for the night as well. I don't think Sawyer was expecting to see them walk around the house because she kind of freaked. Gradually got better - and of course now that we're home she's back to pointing at planes and telling us Grandpa flies airplanes. Hoping she'll be better in two weeks when we head up to Manchester.
That night we headed over to Ann & Ted's again for a 4th of July cookout. Gave the kiddies another chance to play, and Sawyer another chance to take advantage of all Charlie's toys. Her favorite is this car, which they also have at daycare. Every day it's a struggle to get her to leave because she goes for the car on the way out. We headed back to the lake after dinner and watched a couple shows over the lake which was great - no crowds and only 50 ft from bed. Anyway - all in all very good to see the Harris family. We met up one more time on Sunday morning before going separate ways.
Mark and I left breakfast and took Sawyer to the beach at Lake Michigan. She has always seemed to love the beach and ocean/lake, that we didn't want to miss out. It was incredibly hot and crowded, but we managed to stick it out for about an hour and a half before dragging our girl kicking and screaming to the car. No really - I had her over my shoulder like a sack of potatoes and she just kept yelling water. We decided on the ride home from the beach that instead of putting Sawyer down for a nap and hanging in Holland till it was her bedtime before driving home that we would drive home during her nap on Sunday. She's more than a pain in the butt on long car rides so sleeping the whole way is a huge blessing. Was the right decision for us, and at 95 degrees outside, we spent the rest of the day soaking up the A/C.
So with the drive home from Michigan complete, Monday truly was a lazy vacation day. Though Sawyer kicked it off at 6am for us, she was really quite well behaved all day. Mark snagged this picture while we were chomping on some blueberries post nap - after a 4 hour nap the girl needed some sustenance. I think it was the heat, not great sleep the last few days, and pool time this morning that wiped her out. She's had about 4 bowls of blueberries and 3 bowls of cherries today outside of her regular meals.
We ended up grilling some burgers up for dinner. And since these two pictures demonstrate a recurring theme in our girl I'm going to post them. In the below two pictures Sawyer has requested my hamburger to eat. She doesn't want some cut up, she wants the whole thing. I say this is a recurring theme because our girl is independent and wants to do things on her own. She likes to try and help you dress her, put her socks on, put her shoes on, eat with adult utensils, help cook dinner, help do anything really - laundry, pour cereal, etc. Of course she would think that she can also eat a gigantic cheeseburger on her own. That said, she did get a few chunks off.
