This weekend we celebrated Sawyer's first birthday! I think Mark and I are still in shock at how fast this year went, and how big our girl has gotten. All in all it was a good weekend. On Friday we brought some mini-cupcakes to Sawyer's daycare. We were invited to go in at 3pm for their snack time, so i walked over. When I got there, Sawyer had already eaten THREE cupcakes, and they gave her one more for my benefit, which she took down in about four bites. Girl loves her some cupcakes. The downside - I brought Sawyer home with me and about an hour after that she crashed big time requiring an additional afternoon catnap. She woke up right in time for a visit from one of my friends, and Mark coming home from work. We had already decided we weren't doing cake till Sunday, but we did let her open her presents.
Even though daddy did a lot of the work, Sawyer needed some rest after the presents...
Thank you to everyone who sent Sawyer presents - you definitely did not need to - but it was incredibly nice of you to think of her....and we're told more are on their way...so you have officially spoiled her. In addition to some very stylish clothes, Sawyer got a xylophone, books, a see and say farm animal toy, backpack, and some handmade winter hats from Aunt Sue. One of my favorite pics we took of her was with her new backpack. It's the perfect size, and makes her look SO old.
That was the extent of our celebrations on Friday - aside from several singings of Happy Birthday, which Sawyer seemed to enjoy. On Saturday, we met up with Kathy, Caroline and the Blums for brunch at one of our favorite spots and then hurried home because we had a wedding to go to! Our friends Brian and Cara got married on Saturday, and due to the time Sawyer came to the church with us. She was the only child there, other than the flower girl/ring bearer and so we were both trying VERY hard to keep her quiet. While we had two minor screams, she did really well i thought. The bride and groom never knew she was there so i consider it a success. We had a babysitter for the reception, which was beyond nice. Mark and I had a great time catching up with our friends although didn't stay too long due to today's scheduled 15+ mile run. Which brings us to today - Sunday. The plan was to go to the aquarium. We didn't make it today, but are trying to figure out a better day. Due to the run and a very long morning nap we weren't able to get there early and were setting ourselves up for some long lines...so we decided to postpone till another day in the near future. Instead Sawyer got to watch mommy make her birthday cake. I know you're all thinking I should have ordered something, but instead I bought a little mini tart pan, and made Sawyer MY version of a ladybug cake. I call her monkey most of the time, but that just wasn't going to happen. Although my red dye turned out hot pink, I'm happy enough with it - at the very least, it was made with a lot of LOVE. Since we weren't able to share the party with any of you - here's a mini play-by-play. At first, a bit surprised by what she's seeing...
Next, getting REALLY frustrated that she can't eat right away (we made her wait till the end of the song)...
Finally, they gave me what I want...
My work is done...I am VERY happy.
It took both mark and me to clean Sawyer, her high chair, and the floor. Although the pink may not have been the best choice there, it was nothing a bath couldn't fix. That about wraps up our weekend. While we wish we lived closer to have shared it with you, Mark and I did our best to make Sawyer feel special nonetheless. Fingers crossed year 2 doesn't go quite so quickly...
